Nairobi - July 2025

Strathmore University, in partnership with the Remaking Trade Project (RTP), the Climate Action Platform for Africa (CAP-A), the Trade Negotiations and Investment Forum (TNIF), the World Resources Institute (WRI), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), Forum on Trade, Environment, & the SDGs (TESS Forum), and the United Nations Trade and Development (UNCTAD), hosted a workshop on 24–25 July 2025 in Nairobi, Kenya, under the theme “Greening Africa’s Future: Sustainable Trade and Green Industrialisation.” The workshop was attended by over 80 participants, comprising high-level Kenyan and African trade policymakers, youth and women leaders, business leaders and entrepreneurs, academics and students, civil society, think tanks, and regional and international experts in finance, trade, and the environment.

The event brought together a select and highly influential group of experts to explore how Africa can lead the greening of the global trade system by leveraging renewable energy for sustainable growth, increasing participation in carbon markets, and developing ethical mineral supply chains. It also recommended strategies for transitioning from harmful subsidies to green industrial policies, revising frameworks like Special and Differential Treatment (SDT) to support sustainable development, and using the regional framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to drive both regional and global sustainable trade.
