Washington D.C. - February 2024
Against the backdrop of the 13th WTO Ministerial Conference (MC-13) in Abu Dhabi, the Georgetown Law Center on Inclusive Trade and Development (CITD) and the Remaking Trade for a Sustainable Future Project, a joint initiative of the Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy, The Shridath Ramphal Centre for International Trade at the University of the West Indies, and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, supported by a network of academics, policymakers, and researchers across the world – organized a conference in Washington D.C. on Remaking Global Trade for a Sustainable Future. The February conference—the first in a series of convenings and events exploring local and regional approaches to trade reform—explored new directions in U.S. trade policy and ideas for transforming the trade system so it is fit-for-purpose in the twenty-first century. The discussion used as a starting point the Villars Framework for a Sustainable Trade System 2.0, a comprehensive, ambitious, and action-oriented set of proposals for reform that lays out a far-reaching series of items covering both the substantive rules and procedures of global trade.
