The May 2023 workshop, “Remaking Global Trade and Shipping: Toward a Sustainable Transport Future” help in Copenhagen, Denmark, hosted in partnership with the University of Copenhagen, explored key elements of a sustainability agenda for maritime transport, including pathways to decarbonizing the shipping sector, international governance responsibilities in the regulation of maritime freight, carbon pricing and carbon border adjustment mechanisms (CBAM) applied to shipping vessels. Additionally, the discussion turned to the challenge of ensuring an equitable energy transition in shipping practices that does not excessively burden the Global South – with particular focus on how the international trading system can help to promote the transport sector’s transition to a net-zero future.
