Talloires, France September, 2022
The September, 2022 workshop hosted in Talloires, France was the first in a series organized by the Remaking the Global Trading System for a Sustainable Future Project. This workshop focused on a set of issues at the trade-climate change interface including: (i) proposals for border carbon adjustment mechanisms, (ii) carbon clubs, (iii) elimination of fossil fuel subsidies, (iv) a clearly defined “space” for renewable fuel subsidies within the rules of the trading system, and (v) the elimination of tariffs on environmental goods and services. Background “white papers” produced by recognized experts on each of these topics—focusing on both policy options and political strategies—were distributed to participants in advance of the workshop to inform the discussion and spur broad-based consideration of the critical issues at play.
