JANET MACHARIA
FELLOW
Janet Macharia is an international trade law and policy practitioner with specialization in development-focused trade governance. She is a Teaching Fellow at Strathmore University Law School, where she teaches International Trade Law, E-Commerce and the Law, and the Law of Business Associations. She also leads the School’s Trade and Investment Unit and coaches teams for the John H. Jackson Moot Court Competition. Janet is the Chief Executive Officer of the Trade Negotiations and Investment Forum (TNIF), a Nairobi-based think tank advancing Africa’s trade and investment priorities through research, policy dialogue, and strategic convening. Her work focuses on the intersection of trade rules, industrial policy, regional integration, sustainable development, and Africa’s participation in global economic governance. She has contributed to trade and investment policy reforms, including the Kenya National Investment Strategy, and has worked with institutions such as ODI Global and the International Institute for Sustainable Development on sustainable trade, border carbon adjustment, and development-sensitive climate-related trade measures. She has also advised private sector actors on trade and investment frameworks in the EAC and COMESA regions. Her research focuses on Special Economic Zones, fiscal incentives, industrial policy, subsidy regimes, and the treatment of industrial policy tools under African regional trade frameworks, particularly the AfCFTA. Janet holds an LL.M. in International Economic Law and Policy, with distinction, from the Academy of International Economic Law and Policy in Athens, a Postgraduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law, and an LL.B. from Kenyatta University.
